Besides Earnhardt and Rudd, and now Earnhardt Jr and Busch, how many times have two drivers traded places?
At the end of the 1983 season, Dale Earnhardt left the #15 Wrangler Ford and went to the #3 Piedmont Airlines car of Ricky Rudd, and Ricky went to the 15. Wrangler sponsored both cars in 1984, maybe 85 too but I wouldn’t swear to it. Now Jayski reports that Kyle Busch is going to Dale’s spot at DEI in a case of history repeating itself. I’ve only followed racing since about 1980 (the good old days), does anyone know if drivers have swapped rides before, other than Earnhardt/Rudd and Earnhardt/Busch? Just curious.

I seem to remember something along these lines, but never with as big a name driver as your two examples. I think Ganassi did it within his team with Jimmy Spencer and Casey Mears one year, but that was due to owner’s points with the car numbers, to ensure Mears got seat time. And I think something similar happened with the Wood Brothers, either when they had Michael Waltrip, or Kenny Schrader, but Jayski would be the best source on this.
